Koreas, UN Command agree to demilitarise part of border

October 23, 2018 — SpaceDaily.com reports: “The two Koreas and the US-led United Nations Command agreed Monday to demilitarise a section of the heavily fortified border dividing the peninsula by this week, as a diplomatic thaw gathers pace.

‘The three parties agreed to carry out measures to withdraw firearms and guard posts at the Joint Security Area (JSA) by October 25,’ Seoul’s defence ministry said in a statement following trilateral talks.

They will then conduct a ‘three-way joint verification’ for the following two days, it added.

U.S. B-52s fly over South and East China Seas

September 27, 2018 — SpaceDaily.com reports: “US B-52 bombers have recently conducted transit operations in the South China Sea and East China Sea, the Pentagon said Wednesday, amid soaring tensions with Beijing over trade tariffs.

Late Tuesday the heavy bombers ‘participated in a regularly scheduled, combined operation in the East China Sea,’ Pentagon spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Dave Eastburn said.

A defense official said the nuclear-capable aircrafts were escorted by Japanese fighters and the flight was part of the Pentagon’s ‘continuous bomber presence’ in the region.

Earlier in the week, B-52s flew through ‘international airspace over the South China Sea,’ Eastburn said.

China slams US B-52s fly over disputed seas as ‘provocative’

October 2, 2018 — SpaceDaily.com reports: “The Chinese defence ministry on Thursday denounced flyovers by US B-52 bombers over the South China Sea and East China Sea as ‘provocative’ actions amid soaring tensions between the two global powers.

The Pentagon said Wednesday the heavy bombers had taken part in a combined operation with Japan over the East China Sea and had flown through international airspace over the South China Sea a day before.

‘Regarding the provocative actions of US military aircraft in the South China Sea, we are always resolutely opposed to them, and will continue to take necessary measures in order to strongly handle (this issue),’ Chinese defence ministry spokesman Ren Guoqiang told a monthly news briefing.
