US Navy Sends Destroyer to Challenge China Sea Claim

October 27, 2015 — Voice of America News reports: “In what is seen as the most significant challenge yet to territorial limits Beijing asserts around its man-made islands, a U.S. guided-missile destroyer Tuesday sailed within 22 kilometers (12 nautical miles) of a reef in the disputed Spratly archipelago.

The USS Lassen approached Subi reef, occupied by China and also claimed by Taiwan, Vietnam and the Philippines.

The Lassen, homeported at Yokosuka naval base in Japan, was monitored, followed and warned after it ‘illegally’ entered Chinese waters, according to the foreign ministry in Beijing.

China naval chief warns US of conflict risk in South China Sea

November 1, 2015 — SpaceDaily.com reports: “China’s navy chief warned his US counterpart encounters between their forces could spiral into conflict, state media reported, two days after a US destroyer sailed close to Beijing’s artificial South China Sea islands.

The comments by Admiral Wu Shengli, who commands the Chinese navy, were made in a video call with US Admiral John Richardson that lasted about an hour, Beijing’s official Xinhua news agency said Friday.

They came after the USS Lassen guided missile destroyer sailed within 12 nautical miles of at least one of the land formations claimed by China in the disputed Spratly Islands chain.

Chinese authorities monitored and warned away the vessel, but did not otherwise intervene, although Beijing later summoned the US ambassador and denounced what it called a threat to its sovereignty.

‘If the US continues to carry out these kinds of dangerous, provocative acts, there could be a serious situation between frontline forces from both sides on the sea and in the air, or even a minor incident that could spark conflict,’ Xinhua paraphrased Wu as saying…”

North Korea prepping nuclear site for new tests

October 30, 2015 — Israel National News reports: “Reports surfaced on Friday revealing that the North Korean regime is digging a new tunnel at its nuclear test site to conduct new nuclear weapon tests, according to South Korean media.

The nuclear site, which is located on North Korea’s east coast and which has already seen three previous nuclear tests, has recently been filled with busy workers and vehicles digging out the new tunnel, revealed a government source quoted by Yonhap news agency as reported by Reuters.

‘The fact that they are constructing a new tunnel indicates the intention is to conduct a nuclear test at some point,’ the unnamed source explained, adding that it had yet to be proven that the test would be held imminently.

Jeong Joon-Hee, a spokesperson for South Korea’s Unification Ministry, declined to confirm the report, but said his nation and the US are closely monitoring Pyongyang’s nuclear activity.

The report airs just days before a meeting in Seoul on Sunday, in which South Korean, Japanese and Chinese leaders will hold a summit that is to include a discussion of North Korea’s nuclear arsenal…”

North Korea showcases new ‘nuclear’ long-range missile: state TV

October 12, 2015 — SpaceDaily.com reports: “North Korea on Saturday showed off what it said were long-range ballistic missiles carrying miniaturised nuclear warheads, its latest claim to the sophisticated technology which state television said could destroy enemies in a ‘sea of fire’.

Rows of the intercontinental ballistic missiles known as KN-08, which some think could fly far enough to reach the continental US, were paraded through the capital as part of a massive military parade marking the 70th anniversary of the ruling Workers Party.

A defence analyst in Seoul said the new missile appeared to have been modified to allow it to be fitted with a miniature nuclear warhead — a claim echoed by North Korea’s state TV — but others experts said it was impossible to tell.

North Korea has long claimed it has technology capable of launching nuclear bombs at its distant enemies, but experts are sceptical whether the impoverished country has acquired the sophisticated technology needed to produce such weapons.

‘With the vengeful desire to turn the citadel of our enemies into a sea of fire, our powerful tactical rockets loaded with diversified and miniaturised nuclear warheads are on the move,’ the commentator said, as rows of missiles were shown on screen…”
