Invasion of Ukraine revives nuclear warfare nightmare

December 28, 2022  — SpaceWar.com reports: “Banished from public consciousness for decades, the nightmare of nuclear warfare has surged back to prominence with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, highlighting the erosion of the Cold War global security architecture.

With Moscow on the back foot in its offensive, the military stalemate has raised fears Russia could resort to its nuclear arsenal to achieve a breakthrough.

Russia, along with Britain, China, France and the United States, are the five recognised nuclear weapons powers and permanent UN Security Council members.

‘It’s the first time a nuclear power has used its status to wage a conventional war under the shadow cast by nuclear weapons,’ said Camille Grand, a former NATO deputy secretary-general.

‘One might have imagined that rogue states would adopt such an attitude, but suddenly it’s one of the two major nuclear powers, a member of the UN Security Council,’ he told AFP, insisting the actual use of the weapons remains ‘improbable’.

For now, the moral and strategic nuclear ‘taboo’ that emerged after the US bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II in 1945 still holds.

Putin says Russia will continue improving ‘combat readiness’ of nuclear forces

December 21, 2022  — The Times of Israel reports: “Russian President Vladimir Putin says Russia will continue developing its military potential and the combat readiness of nuclear forces against the backdrop of Moscow’s offensive in Western-backed Ukraine.

‘The armed forces and combat capabilities of our armed forces are increasing constantly and every day. And this process, of course, we will build up on,’ Putin says during a televised defense meeting, adding that Russia will also ‘improve the combat readiness of our nuclear triad.’”

Putin says Russia could adopt preemptive strike concept

December 12, 2022  — SpaceWar.com reports: “President Vladimir Putin on Friday said Russia could amend its military doctrine by introducing the possibility of a preemptive strike to disarm an enemy, in an apparent reference to a nuclear attack.

He spoke in response to a question from a reporter who asked him to clarify his statement from earlier this week on the use of nuclear weapons.

Speaking to reporters just days after warning that the risk of nuclear war was rising but Russia would not strike first, Putin said Moscow was considering whether to adopt what he called Washington’s concept of a pre-emptive strike.

‘First of all, the United States has the concept of a preemptive strike. Second, it is developing a disarming strike system,’ Putin told reporters in Kyrgyzstan.

Putin said Moscow might need to think about adopting US ‘ideas for ensuring their own security.’

Russia ramping up production of ‘most powerful’ weapons: Medvedev

December 12, 2022  — SpaceWar.com reports: “Russia’s ex-president Dmitry Medvedev said on Sunday the country was ramping up production of new-generation weapons to protect itself from enemies in Europe, the United States and Australia.

‘We are increasing production of the most powerful means of destruction. Including those based on new principles,’ Medvedev said on messaging app Telegram.

‘Our enemy dug in not only in the Kyiv province of our native Malorossiya,’ Medvedev said, using the term to describe territories of modern-day Ukraine that were part of the Russian Empire under the tsars.

‘It is in Europe, North America, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and a whole number of other places that pledged allegiance to the Nazi.’

Medvedev, who serves as deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, did not provide details of the weapons.

President Vladimir Putin repeatedly said that Russia has been developing new types of weapons including hypersonic weapons that he boasts can circumvent all existing missile defence systems…”

‘Complete and Thorough Disarmament’: China Demands U.S. Destroy Its Nuclear Arsenal
